My journey to Kashmir has been more than just admiring the breathtaking mountains and valleys. It has been an extraordinary experience of connecting with the heart and soul of this land.
An artist, Abdul Qayoom Shah, a 60 years old painter, graciously invited me to his humble abode and introduced me to the essence of Kashmir and its people. As I spend these 9 days here, I have delved into a world that goes beyond the confines of binary Hindu-Muslim divisions and political conflicts.
In my exploration, I have encountered the luminous spirits of Lal Ded, also known as Laleshwari, a Kashmiri Shaivite-Sufi saint, affectionately referred to as Lalima (Lal mother or Lal grandmother) by the Kashmiri people. Her wisdom, poetry and teachings resonate deeply within the hearts of every Kashmiri.
I have also discovered the profound spiritual teachings of Sheikh ul Alam, revered as the spiritual teacher of the world, known as Shaykh Nooruddin for Muslims and Nund Rishi for Hindus. The poetic expressions of Sufi Bulbul Shah have enraptured my senses and awakened my soul.
The melodic strains of Urdu and Hindi poetry sung by maestros like Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Farid Ayaz, Prahlad Tipaniya, Sabnam Virmani, and Abida Parveen have always captivated me. Yet, it is the enchanting Kashmiri voices of artists like Adnan Bulbul and Hafiz Rashid that have left me spellbound. Abdul Qayoom Shah, himself, is a living legacy of these Sufi saints, not a poet but a painter, bridging gaps of those conflicts and nurturing profound connections and love among diverse people, leading them closer to the Divine through his paintings.
Kashmir is not only a place of unparalleled beauty but also a spiritual sanctuary that calls for an open mind and receptive heart. It offers a glimpse into a realm where the skeleton of conflict dissipates, revealing the true spirit that resides within.
I am grateful for this unexpected journey, where the enchantment of Kashmir has enveloped me completely. I urge everyone to experience the beauty and spirituality of Kashmir, allowing its essence to touch your soul and transform your perspective.
With love and reverence,
Rajeev Kumar
